"Will I make it?"
Allow me to pre-occupy you with some proven tips on how to keep your butterflies in control.
- Understand your material
Choose a topic you're interested in. Research and add more to your knowledge than to your speech ( in case someone questions you.) Use humor to entertain your audience. Add some of your personal stories. Use a conversational language - so you won't easily go off the topic. - Repetition. Repetition. Repetition!
Practice makes you perfect. Rehearse yourself with a loud voice and revise as necessary. Practice with a timer and keep some extra time for the unexpected occurrences.
Record your speech delivery and replay it for yourself to spot your weaknesses. After identifying, cut them into zero, and repeat the procedure. - Be familiar with the room
"Better 3 hours too soon than one minute too late"
So arrive early and walk around the speaking area and make yourself familiar with the surrounding. And rehearse using the microphone or any other visual aids. - Know your audience
Greet and talk with some of the audience members as they arrive. The best way to engage your audience is to focus specifically on their needs. This will help you with your speech. Connecting with your audience in advance will lower your nervousness because it is easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers. - Visualize your Success
Before you're summoned on stage, imagine yourself delivering the speech, your voice up and the continuously applauding audience. This will boost up your confidence. - Relax
Once you're on the stage, begin by addressing the audience. It'll buy you enough time to calm your nerves, and loose the nervousness. Then pause. Take a deep breath. Put on a smile. Count to three. And Begin. (Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.)
- Remember that people want you to be a star
Know that your audience want you to be interesting, informative and also entertaining. So, why don't satisfy their desires?
When you're giving the speech keep your eye-contact with the familiar faces so it will distract your butterflies.
And don't apologize for any problem. It may be your nervousness or something else. Tell you what, the audience would probably never notice it. So why throw yourself into the pit?
Realize that, Good public speaking is more than using proper grammar and coherent sentences. Your audience is rooting for you. So just make them happy.
- Gain experience
"The most valuable source of knowledge is 'experience'."
So, if you can just put what you learned into practice, You will become a much better speaker!
